The name is scary, but a so-called sleep regression is a temporary period when sleep gets worse because of a developmental leap: the brain, mid-construction, learning to roll, sit, process separation or form language, stays switched on to the day's project even at night. Sleep gets worse because the baby is moving forward.
Day 11 teaches you to recognize such a phase without over-diagnosing at home, presents the three classic ages, 4, 8 and 12 months, and hands you a crossing manual in six instructions, none of them heroic.
What you'll learn in the 3 chapters
- 1
What sleep regressions are
You will understand why progression would be a fairer name, the two marks that help recognize the phase, and the suspects check before giving that name to a bad week.
- 2
The classic phases: 4, 8 and 12 months
This chapter walks through the 4-month phase, which is a change that stays, the 8-month one, with physical skills and separation anxiety, and the 12-month one, with the big debuts and the bridge from two naps to one.
- 3
How to get through without despair
Here is the crossing manual: hold the anchors, sign no new contracts at 3 a.m., give the new skill a stage by day, fill the emotional tank, allow a tactical retreat with a review date, and know when the name is wrong.
